  • Warsong Gulch Oddities

    TASTE MY W.o.W :
    Warsong Gulch Odds

    Right.

So, in my last post, I shared that I recently tried out PvP battle for the first time. Warsong Gulch is my favourite because the raid team is small (10 vs. 10) and it's a "Capture the Flag" style game play which is more fun.

    Some basic info first:
Warsong Gulch has the easiest and least complicated game play objectives. 3 rounds to decide who's the winner and  all you need to do is...

    1) Have enemy's flag into your keep while
    2) Making sure your own flag is present in the keep as well.

Also, courtesy of yours truly, here's a map of the battle area for visual aid. The flags are marked at their start points inside the respective keeps.

    Red ★ for the Horde.
    Blue for the Alliance.

Now one thing I noticed about PvP-ing in Warsong Gulch is the players who join the group, rush out to kill for Honour Points, fulfill their blood-lust ... etc, and in the process, neglect to protect their flag and flag bearer.

This has to change. Compared to other battlegrounds, Warsong Gulch is not all about kills or conquering sides. If it's Honour Points you're grubbing for, just do the math:

One kill gains you 1 point but if you pitch flags, you earn 6 points. If your side is the overall winner, 45 point reward. If, say, you manage to pitch all 3 flags, you'll get 63 points easily which is akin to the effort of downing 63 players. This tally, just to add, isn't inclusive of points you might have gotten along the way.

Let's now assume that points are not the case and the actual case of straying is because you feel you're inadequately geared or skilled to do big jobs. Thus, you decide to help by thinning the numbers of the other side. Your intentions are in the right place and if you apply this to the dynamics of teamwork, you'd do your team good.

Like, escort and defend the flag bearer, for one thing because solo trips make them susceptible to ambushes. That, and there's also the stacking  buff that lowers their defense for 10% per stack so do realise the huge pressure on them.

In PvP as in war, everyone counts so no matter your level or class is, you possess crucial skills to benefit and aid your group. I'll pick on Death Knights as an example because I don't have thorough knowledge about the other classes (yet).

The Death Knight's Death Grip ability is an incredibly versatile ability. It functions as a pull which means the DK can yank enemies off a weakened ally or bring back an enemy flag bearer. Plus, it's has a medium / long range so when put to creative use, rooftop enemies can be brought down (literally and non) and enemies can be picked away from their packs.

Another ability, Strangulate, is a fantastic counter against enemy healers or any spell casting classes. It's silencing effect nullifies spells for a mere few seconds but that brief window is enough to potentially cripple an enemy or their formation, if used at the right time.

Well, I am done with the constructive(?) enlightening(?) pointless(?) complaint about what I feel Warsong Gulch PvP should be like. I've yet to come across anything worthy of a mega-facepalm in PvP yet but when I do, check back to this blog because I'm on some sort of W.o.W blogging roll at the moment.

    Tootles and thanks for reading!

  • W.o.W: Why Are PvP Battles Fun?

    TASTE MY W.o.W :
    Why Are PvP Battles Fun?

    http://images.inquisitr.com/wp-content/2011/06/world-of-warcraft-infographic.jpg

    *You no know PvP?
Player Versus Player; combat instances where you use your character to fight / do battle against another person's character.

    - - - - -

Kind of useless but I thought I'd write about why PvP-ing feels so good -- at least to me.

A few days ago, I found the PvP window and decided to give it a shot out of curiosity. Being a newbie (in all aspects) to the game, my first PvP battle was like entering a criminal's den and exclaiming: "Hey, y'all ... so what do we do 'round here?"

Actually, if you happened to be present during my first PvP instance, then you'd know that was pretty much how I introduced myself.

The whole gist of PvP,the way I saw it before trying, is basically the pitting of my character against your character and we'll see who wins ... kind of like Street Fighter or Tekken. But in W.o.W, PvP is compelled by mission-style / competition game play which doubles the fun in taking out the enemy side.

I'll use the first instance I got as an example: Warsong Gulch with a  "Capture the Flag" style where PvP is used to defend the flag and to offend for the flag. This makes PvP-ing about teamwork and battle tactics as well.

I found PvP-ing a different experience from the usual dungeons that I compulsively do mostly because it's real, living players you're up against instead programmed NPCs. Also, in PvP, you lose the advantage of being in a team.

But what, you ask, is the thrill in slaying other players?

This is just my opinion but mind, it's very long-winded:

PvP-ing has this uncanny way of inciting a very dark, hidden thrill. I call it "competitive excitement". In PvP circumstances, competitive excitement is what makes the fighting and winning such an enjoyment.

From the moment combat is initiated, I feel that pressure to kill or be killed. At that very moment, I am pitting my all -- every character / battle / tactical / knowledge / reaction / dexterity skill -- against my opponent in an intense do or die, sink or swim  situation.

Thing is -- shock horror -- the enemy is doing the same against me which is why when I reduce that life gauge 0%, it is a gratifying "+100" stat reward to the ego. An exalting testament of pwnage skills dexterity with the keyboard and mouse, if you will.

So, this is why PvP-ing is fun. It tests your individual mettle and skill as a class player with real-time combat. Sure you'll
stake a little pride, a little glory and a little ass-whooping but that's what games are about, right? An outlet of fun and a field to show off some skill.

    And now...

    A confession:
Mid-game, I realised skill rotations don't work so well in PvP and so, whilst afflicted by horrific-realisation panic, I employed the Street Fighter "No-Fail" Win tactic: bash all the buttons. It worked!
